Edition 1978-1989

In 1978 the traditional 100 km is now a cycling race(podistic) rather than a walking run. A team of sportive societies (Salus Ciclistica di Seregno di Giuseppe Meroni, G.S. Veducc di Veduggio, Amici dello Sport di Desio, G.S. Altopiano di Severo, Amici dello Sport di Briosco, Polisportiva Besanese) became the planning committee of the first “100km della Brianza”. Even after almost twenty years of “fasting” it was a success : more than 700 of people joined that unforgettable Saturday, of September 30, 1978. Thousands of supporters were to there to encourage the runners - a success that must take it’s place in the “history book” of running.

The first edition of the cycling race went to Loris Gennari, with his twin brother Elvino, athletes Luigi Citterio, Eugenio Franconi and the baker of Cernusco (Milan) Mario Zanaboni dominating throughout the next 6 edition.

The history of this version of the 100 km lasted 12 years, starting in 1978 and finishing in 1989. On the 23rd of September, the last edition took place.

The last year saw the Hungarian runner Attila Vozar and Monica Casiraghi win the “modern” edition of the “100km” . It took less then seven hours (6h57) for Vozar, while Casiraghi took less then eight (7h56).

Edition 1959

The “second” 100Km of Seregno was the 37th edition.

The date was again the 1st of November, “Gazzetta dello Sport” and Italsilva soap factory still respectively the event organizer and sponsor. The number of contenders increased to 45, representing 9 nations. The start took place at 4 a.m. from the boarding school Ballerini, in via Verdi (Seregno). The finish was yet again at Ferruccio Stadium (Seregno) but, this time, the lap went mostly through the Brianza cities.

Between the Italian athletes, there were notable names such as Pino Dordoni from Diana Piacenza, who won in 1949, and many “playing at home” runners such as Luigi Manzoni, Gino Riva, Sandro Elli, Italo Galbiati, Antonio Gadolla e Alfredo Vismara from “Daini Carate”.

The winner was the Briton, Tom Misson, with second place following for Don Thompson. The highest placed Italian finisher (in fourth place) was Luigi Manzoni. Only four years passed since the last edition, but the crowd was still supportive, warm and present every step and minute of the way.

Edition 1955

The first definitive “Seregnese” was the 34th 100Km. The Seregno Edition took place Tuesday November 1st, organized by “Gazzetta dello Sport gran premio Italsilva” (as sponsor) and “Trophy City of Seregno”. It was under invitation as the Italian and foreign marchers had to be card-carrying member of Official Federations: 37 athletes, 17 foreigners and 7 Nations represented. The Mayor of Seregno of that time, Lawyer Giovanni Colombo, used a public manifesto to invite every citizen to a warm sense of hospitality.

Monday October 31st ,at 18.30, the athletes were received by the Administration in the Municipal Palace. At 10 p.m., a torchlight walk took place inside the City until the 3 a.m. Holy Mass in the Sanctuary of S.Valeria. At 4, from the Sanctuary’s plaza, the race started. The end of the race was foreseen to be at 14.00, Tuesday 1st of November.

The lap went through the nearest towns, not only inside the “Brianza area” (infact – beside Seregno, Desio, Cesano, Giussano, Lissone, Meda, Monza and Vedano, as the biggest names in the Brianza area, there were also Nova Milanese, Calderara a Paderno Dugnano, Cusano Milanino, Cormano, Novate, Bollate).

The 1955 Edition was won by 22 year old Londoner, Don Thompson. First one between the Italians Pietro Rota, runner for the “Legler Ponte S.Pietro”. The event became part of 100 km history thanks to another participant not competing at the race, but as present as any real athlete: the public. The crowd - generous, present, supportive - encouraged the runners, deserving, for this reason, the pectoral n.38. The winning athlete said, ‘I won easily because, throughout the race, I was supported by voices screaming “Come on, Thompson!”’.
